CMYK vs CMYKW ? Which Should You Choose?

The main difference between the 4-color (CMYK) and 5-color (CMYKW) configurations on the Roland BN2-20 or BN2-30 comes down to printing capabilities, media type compatibility, and application flexibility.

1. Color Channels

Config Channels Installed Purpose
CMYK Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black Standard four-color process printing for full-color images on white or light-colored materials.
CMYKW Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black + White Adds White Ink for printing on dark, colored, metallic, or transparent materials and for special effects.

2. Printing Capabilities

Feature CMYK CMYKW
Prints full-color on white/light media YES YES
Prints on dark/colored media - YES (White underprint creates a base layer)
Prints on clear media - YES (White underprint or spot white for opacity)
Specialty effects (textures, highlights) - YES (White can be used for layered textures)

3. Application Differences

CMYK Only:

  • Best for stickers, labels, posters, signs on white vinyl or paper.
  • More economical: only 4 inks, faster print speeds (no white layer pass).
  • Lower maintenance (white ink can require more cleaning due to settling).

CMYKW:

  • Enables printing on clear adhesive vinyl (window graphics).
  • Prints vibrant designs on dark vinyl and colored surfaces.
  • Compatible with specialty media such as metallic films, leather, and fabrics.
  • White can be used under colors (underprint) or over them (overprint).
  • Slightly slower prints (extra white pass) and more maintenance.

4. Which to Choose?

  • Choose CMYK if you mainly print on white vinyl or paper for speed, simplicity, and lower costs.
  • Choose CMYKW if you want maximum flexibility for clear, dark, or specialty media and higher-value applications.

Why Eco-Sol MAX 2

  • Faster drying times to increase productivity and throughput
  • Outstanding water, scratch, and UV resistance with three-year outdoor durability*
  • Aggressive adhesion on a wide range of uncoated materials
  • Virtually odorless; no special ventilation or environmental equipment required

*Outdoor durability may vary by application, media, and environmental conditions. Always follow printer and media best practices.

WARNING: WARNING: WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA and use Protective Equipment (including masks and gloves) when working with specialty printing and curing products and processes (including DTF, DTG, UV etc.) as fumes and processes may be hazardous. We highly recommend the use of a fume extractor when working with DTF powder in addition to good ventilation and filtration in your work area. The use of all specialty ink printing equipment and supplies such as inks, chemicals, powders etc. are at the sole risk of the user. Specialty inks and film require a good humidity and temperature environment (55% - 75% humidity, and 75° to 80°F) to minimize risk of ink clogs and film buckling.
