MagicPowder® Specialty Transfer Powders

Patent-pending White and Soft White MagicPowder® provide adhesion plus an opaque white backing behind the printed CMYK image. Bring compatible DTF Hack transfers to colored and dark garments-including black-without adding white ink to the printer.

Choosing the Right MagicPowder®

MagicPowder® is a patent-pending family of specialty adhesive powders for traditional DTF, compatible transfers with or without white ink, the DTF Hack using pigment or sublimation ink, HTF, foil transfers and other specialty applications. Selection starts with the complete transfer process. Traditional DTF prints already have a white-ink backing, while compatible desktop transfers can use white-pigmented powder to create that backing without white ink in the printer. Colored powders serve a different purpose: they supply the visible design color in compatible HTF applications.

Adhesion, opacity and design color are different functions. Clear MagicPowder® supplies adhesion without an opaque backing. Patent-pending White and Soft White supply adhesion plus an opaque white backing behind a printed image. Colored MagicPowder® supplies adhesion plus the selected design color for compatible single-color HTF transfers.

Garment color alone does not determine compatibility. Match the powder to the printer, ink, transfer media, fabric and application instructions. White and Soft White may also be used on white garments when the specified workflow calls for a white backing.

DTF Transfers With or Without White Ink

Traditional DTF With White Ink

In a traditional DTF workflow, the printer produces the CMYK artwork and its white-ink backing on DTF film. Clear MagicPowder® provides the adhesive that bonds the transfer to the garment. The white ink supplies opacity, so the powder does not need to add another white backing.

This distinction matters on dark garments: Clear powder can be appropriate because the transfer already contains a printed white layer. Choose the powder and settings specified for your ink, film and fabric.

Compatible Transfers Without White Ink

When the transfer system is designed to work without printed white ink, White or Soft White MagicPowder® can provide both adhesion and the white backing behind the CMYK image. For specified white-garment applications, Clear powder can provide adhesion while the garment supplies the background.

Use a validated combination of printer, ink, transfer media and powder. These options do not mean white ink can simply be switched off in every conventional DTF setup.

Clear vs. White vs. Soft White MagicPowder®

Clear MagicPowder®: Choose it when an additional opaque backing is not needed. Use it for traditional DTF transfers that already contain white ink, compatible desktop transfers onto white garments, and MAGICINK® foil transfers where the foil provides the finish. Clear powder does not make a CMYK-only image opaque on a dark garment.

Patent-Pending White and Soft White MagicPowder®: These white-pigmented options provide both adhesion and a white backing behind the printed image. In compatible desktop workflows, that backing allows full-color transfers onto colored and dark garments, including black, without printing a white-ink layer. This avoids the settling, circulation and clogging concerns associated specifically with white ink; routine printer maintenance still applies.

Use the individual product instructions to choose between White and Soft White. They serve the same broad role of adding a white backing, but should not be assumed interchangeable across every ink, media and fabric combination.

The DTF Hack: Pigment Ink or Sublimation Ink

The DTF Hack offers two distinct pathways: compatible pigment inkjet printing and compatible sublimation inkjet printing. In either pathway, the printer produces the mirrored CMYK image on the specified MagicLine® Desktop Transfer Sheets. MagicPowder® supplies the adhesive and, when White or Soft White is specified, the white backing behind the image. The printer supplies the full-color artwork; the powder does not replace the CMYK inks.

For the DTF with a sublimation printer pathway, the process uses a transfer layer bonded to the garment rather than relying on conventional sublimation directly into the garment fibers. With the correct components, it can be used for compatible cotton and dark-garment applications that conventional direct sublimation is not suited to.

Apply the powder, cure, heat press, peel and complete any required finishing steps according to the instructions for the specific system. The pigment and sublimation pathways require their own compatible inks and media; adding powder alone does not make every inkjet printer, transfer sheet or fabric suitable.

Colored MagicPowder® for Weedless HTF Designs

Colored MagicPowder® works with compatible MAGICINK® HTF applications to provide both the adhesive and the visible design color. The printed MAGICINK® pattern defines the artwork, while the selected powder supplies its color or specialty finish. White powder can create a white single-color design, just as black or another colored powder can supply that chosen design color.

This approach is suited to weedless, single-color lettering, logos and graphics without printing colored ink. Choose from the available standard colors and specialty finishes, and use the instructions for the specific ink, media and powder combination.

For a full-color photographic or multicolor CMYK image, use the appropriate full-color transfer workflow with Clear, White or Soft White powder. Colored HTF powder is not a substitute for the CMYK image in that process.

HTF, Foil Transfers and Specialty Applications

MagicPowder® also has a role in compatible HTF and foil-transfer systems, where the aim may be a single-color graphic, a foil finish or another specialty effect rather than a full-color CMYK print. The powder choice depends on whether the system needs adhesion alone, an opaque backing or a powder-supplied design color.

Foil transfers: In a compatible MAGICINK® foil workflow, print the design with MAGICINK® and use Clear MagicPowder® to create the bonding layer. The foil provides the final visible color or finish. Follow the specified transfer and MagicFoil® finishing process for the selected media and foil.

Other specialty uses: Select powders and specialty finishes according to the individual product's intended application. Fabric, substrate, ink or adhesive, media, opacity and desired finish all affect the choice. A powder suitable for one garment-transfer process is not automatically suitable for every material or decorative effect.

Complete the DTF Hack With MagicSeal® Fusion

Powder selection is one part of the complete pigment or sublimation DTF Hack system. MagicPowder® provides adhesion and, with White or Soft White, the backing that supports the printed colors. MagicSeal® Fusion Spray is used after the initial transfer press and activated during the finishing press to help protect the image and improve wash durability.

Follow the current MagicLine® instructions for the complete combination of transfer sheet, ink, powder and finishing product. Curing, pressing, peeling, finishing and laundering all contribute to the final result.

MagicPowder® Frequently Asked Questions

Does Every MagicPowder® Add Color?

No. Clear MagicPowder® supplies adhesion without an opaque backing or design color. White and Soft White add a white backing, while colored powders supply the visible design color in compatible HTF applications.

Can I Use MagicPowder® With Pigment Ink or Sublimation Ink?

Yes, in the compatible pigment or sublimation pathways of the MagicLine® DTF Hack. Use Clear for the specified white-garment application, or White or Soft White when a white backing is required. Each pathway needs its specified printer, ink, transfer sheets and finishing process.

What MagicPowder® Should I Use for Dark Shirts?

For compatible CMYK-only desktop transfers, White or Soft White provides the white backing behind the image. For traditional DTF transfers that already include a printed white-ink backing, Clear powder provides adhesion. For a single-color HTF design, choose the colored powder specified for that application.

Can MagicPowder® Replace White Ink?

White and Soft White can supply the white backing normally printed with white ink in compatible MagicLine® desktop transfer workflows. The printer still produces the CMYK image. This does not mean white ink can simply be omitted from every conventional DTF printing process.

Can I Use Clear Powder on a Light-Colored Shirt?

Clear powder adds no opaque white backing, so the garment color can affect the appearance of a CMYK-only transfer. White garments are the intended choice for the compatible Clear desktop workflow described here. For colored garments, use the specified White or Soft White workflow when opacity is needed.

Can MagicPowder® Be Used for Foil Transfers?

Yes. Clear MagicPowder® is used in compatible MAGICINK® foil-transfer workflows to create the bonding layer while the foil supplies the final color or effect. Use the specified ink, transfer media and foil, and follow the applicable MagicFoil® finishing instructions.

Do All MagicPowder® Products Use the Same Press Settings?

Do not assume one set of settings applies to every powder. Follow the current curing, pressing, peeling and finishing instructions for the exact product and transfer system. Test adhesion, appearance and wash performance on the intended fabric before production.
